November 27- December 3, 2017.

For those racing in Canmore- REGISTER!!! Registration closes on Wednesday. I sent an email to everyone last week with the info.

Well done today on the race everyone!! Thank you to ALL the parents who were involved in pulling it off. Please make sure you thank your parents, athletes!!!

Juvenile and older athletes require a CCC racing license- 2003 and older. Please go to the CCC website and register for one. My coaching number is on the side of this blog.

Tuesday: We will classic. Practice will be cut short and for those who are going to Canmore, we will be waxing from 6:30 onwards- classic and skate- Rex blue or CH6. This will be provided by Claire.

Supper will be provided to those waxing up a storm. For those who are coming out to practice but not racing- please feel free to help out with waxing.

Friday: Meet at the Canmore Lodge for 1:30pm. Usually first one there secures a spot in the lodge for us and our gear. The kids will ski their courses with a coach or two- skate, and then return their skis to the wax room so that they can be prepped for the next days.

Saturday: Show up 1.5 hours prior to your race (post on zone4 around 1930hrs) to ensure you have enough time to warm up etc. Please see the media section in Teamsnap for race prep forms.

Sunday: Show up 2 hours prior to your race to ensure your wax is good and that you can get up and around your race course and warm up adequately.

Any questions or concerns- please text or call Claire: 780-933-0853

November 20-26, 2017

It’s Snow-maggedon outside!!! And Crawford has done an amazing job with the trails!! Woohoo!!!

REMINDER: Claire will be away from Dec 8-19 inclusive. IF you need anything between now and then, please email or text me this week and I will be in touch. This coming weekend is my last available weekend until Christmas! The blog will be written and updated while I’m away.

IMPORTANT: Please email Claire To let her know your intentions of racing in Canmore Dec 1&2 AND racing in Edmonton Dec 16&17. I need to know my numbers ASAP to plan appropriately. OR go to the TeamSnap page and under tasks- highlight yes or no to your names please before next weekend.

Team dinners on packing night: yes or no? Email Claire please your thoughts regarding this.

I am available to help with teaching waxing THIS Saturday before or after practice- email Claire If you would like assistance and we can plan for this.

Everyone: please note that practice has been delayed every night since snow has arrived- please come to practice early to prep your skis and be on snow on time. If you are waxing your skis before practice give yourself enough time to be on snow. If you’re planning on arriving and just getting on your skis, it still takes about 10 min to get dressed and ready... be on time please.

Tuesday: Classic skiing. Dress warmly and be prepared to be away from the lodge. Don’t forget water bottles and holders.

Thursday: Skate skiing.

Saturday: Classic skiing 10-12. Long distance ski.

Sunday: First 6PAC race. Skate Race- Registration closes at1:30. Race start at 2pm. Think about your race plan and plan accordingly please. You are in charge of waxing your own skis. If you would like help text Claire (933-0853) and let me know and I will make plans to help you out.

November 13-19, 2017

We have snow and so we're skiing. There should be enough snow to not rely on the Revolutions now. Please show up on time and with time to spare to get onto snow on time. There are lots of stragglers and it's hard to get everyone going with limited time

TIME CHANGE: 5:45-7:15pm this week and for the rest of the season. Saturday is still 10-12.

For those athletes Juvenile or older please don't forget to register with CCC to get your racing license. Click HERE to get that done. This is for those athletes racing at any of the Alberta Cup Races who are born in 2003 or are older. My coaching info is on the right side of this blog.

Please remember to bring: water bottle holder and water bottle, headlamps and warm clothes. Also plan for both techniques, with the amount of snow that we're supposed to get this week, we may be able to classic ski.

Tuesday: Skate practice-I will need as many coaches as available for this week and next please- the more the merrier!! :) For some of you who are ready, there will be intervals; for others there will be technique and strength building still. So be prepared to be split into different groups when you get to practice.

Thursday: Similar to Tuesday- maybe different technique if there's a track. Yet to be determined.

Saturday: Bring both sets of skis/boots etc- we may break it up over both techniques. Bring a snack and don't forget your water bottles.

Everyone!
Canmore is 2 weeks away- I will be asking Mary-Ann to send out an invitation for families to bring food for the waxing/prep evening before going to Canmore (this will be Tuesday Nov 28) those of you not racing are welcome to help others pack their gear or to head home early as practice will be ending early this evening. Please also respond on TeamSnap- if you're coming or not- DO NOT ASSUME THAT I KNOW YOUR INTENTIONS!!

November 6-12, 2017

Mallory said although it was -19oC, you guys still rocked the workout! Well done everyone! There's lots of snow around the province and Kananaskis has track set their trails!!! It's coming soon to Grande Prairie, but not soon enough…

BRING YOUR HEADLAMPS

Teamsnap will also be up and running and I will do my best to keep this up-to-date as well beginning next week.

NOTE: With the time change, practice USUALLY changes. As the lodge isn't open yet- and we're on skis that don't require waxing, let's keep the time the same for this week. Someone has run a skidoo around biathlon and although it's not fantastic, it's ski-able. IF you have rock skis, please bring them as we don't have enough pairs for everyone. There are a few new kids to the team who definitely don't have them and I'm hoping that everyone has SNS boots (preferably older boots, but not necessary) to fit the skis.

Tuesday: 5-6:30pm at Biathlon- upper parking lot. I'll have the skis up there. Dress appropriately for the weather please. A lot of this practice will be just getting used to skis on our feet again which usually means people get cold as it's not a hard workout- those will come, I promise!!!:D

Thursday: 5-6:30pm at Biathlon. Same idea as Tuesday -skate skiing again. Bring a headlamp.

JUNIOR'S YOU'RE ON SNOW ON SATURDAY'S NOW!!!

Saturday: We will NOT be going to Hinton and will be at the lodge from 10-12 for a skate ski practice. Be prepared to ski a lot of laps- at least now I will be able to see you!! :D Bring snacks and water bottles.

Sunday, October 29, 2017

October 30-November 5, 2017

Snow is in the forecast- this sadly doesn't mean that we're skiing yet. :( BUT we're getting close. Try to get all your gear ready for when we do have snow please. This makes the first few days on snow less chaotic!!

Please return all roller skis to Claire by Thursday practice!!

Tuesday- meet at Muskoseepi. Please remember that practice will be from 5-6pm for everyone. Please plan accordingly for this. It's rest week so we're working out, just not quite as hard and as long.

Thursday- Meet at the lodge and bring water bottles. Regular practice times. And dress warmly- it'll be chilly!!

Saturday- Meet at the dunes parking lot between 10-12 for a running workout with SKI POLES. Apparently, just because we're a ski team- poles seem to be merely optional? Be prepared for mud and ice- it's supposed to be -10oC, please dress properly! :D Winter is coming!!!!

Monday, October 23, 2017

September 23-29, 2017

Hey Crew!

One more build week and then we're into rest week... Yes, I'll be nicer next week! :D  Congratulations to those who ran in the race this past weekend at the trails- I hope everyone had a good time!!

Tuesday- looks like we will be getting wet. Please dress appropriately and meet at Muskoseepi. You will need water bottles for this workout and we will be getting wet- so don't wear anything brand new and fancy! Gloves and toques are recommended.

Thursday- out at the lodge- bring water bottles and be ready to work up a storm!!

Saturday- meet at Bertozzi's- for directions, see last week's blog please. 10-12.

A heads up for next week- practice on Tuesday will end at 6pm for BOTH teams. Please plan accordingly.

Sunday, October 15, 2017

October 16-22, 2017.

Hello crew!  Winter is well on it's way and I'm excited to see some snow soon!! A few years ago we were skiing by the 21st… fingers crossed!!

This week come prepared for running, working on strength and working hard. Bring water bottles WITH holders please.

A HUGE shout out to Lori Brough for spearheading the Fast and Female event we had on Sunday! Loved seeing most of you girls out there and the energy and willingness to help new kids out- made me so proud. You're all awesome ambassadors and I thank you all for being so super! No, this doesn't mean this week I'll go easy on you!!! :D

Tuesday: Meet at Muskoseepi Pavilion.

Thursday: Meet at the ski lodge.

Saturday: Meet at the Bertozzi's house- Dunes road- from Highway 40- turn left instead of right into the ski lodge. When you get to the stop sign. Go straight and turn right on your 4th right into the little winding driveway. Please don't be late- we have lots to accomplish and WEAR BRIGHT CLOTHES! Also, bring a snack and short poles. We are done roller skiing for the season now- so please keep skiing on your own if you have a pair, or, if you think you won't go out anymore on them- please return to them to Claire.

OR

Participate in the Wolves race at the ski trails: https://www.gprc.ab.ca/athletics/events/running/wanderingwolf.html

Have fun!! Be at one or the other please and just let me know at practice if you’re racing or training.

Have a great week!!

Sunday, October 1, 2017

October 2-8, 2017.

One month down already…

Tuesday- Bring water and running shoes. No water bottle holder necessary for this workout. I will be leaving early- so you will all do your cool down run together. Juniors- you will be with Coach Caroline- please remember to wear proper running shoes, bring water and water bottle holder.

Thursday- meet at thrill hill! Both Juniors and Seniors. I will be away, coach Caroline and Coach Mallory will be leading this workout.

Satuday- Happy Thanksgiving. There will be no practice today. Please spend time outside with your families and go for a bike ride or get lost in the corn maze! Have a great weekend and see you all refreshed for a good hard workout week next week! :)

Week of September 25-October 1, 2017

It's officially training time!! None of this easy stuff from here on in!!! Muahahahahahahahahahah

Actually, looking that the fitness test results so far and Thursday's Thrill hill workout- you're where I need you to be, so super awesome work crew! Remember Tuesday & Thursday is 5-6pm; Saturday is 10-12 for senior team.

Rain or shine, we're working out. Saturday I'm aiming to be roller skiing for as many Saturday's as we can- so please come with all ski gear and runners for just in case. Helmets are mandatory!!

Tuesday- Coach Caroline reminded me that she's not here today- which explains why I planned the workout I did plan and I'm excited!!! Is that a good sign for the athlete when the coach is excited?? Hmmmmm….. It's one of my favourite, as I get eyes on you the whole time and bring water!! Lots of it- you tend to need it for this workout. Also, juniors- you too are doing this workout- so wearing proper running shoes, bring water and snack for after practice is important.

Thursday- Meet at the ski lodge. Bring water and
water bottle holders…<--- subtle hey? :) = we're on the move.
Juniors, you too- it's important to not forget those!

Satuday- We will aim to roller ski. Bring runners for the warmup and if it's raining- bring a rain jacket and dress with lots of layers. The mornings are getting colder- so bring toque, gloves, buff… the usual gear. As the temperature changes we need to change with it, or we get sick… let's avoid that please!

I'm looking forward to this week! See you all soon!!!!

Sunday, September 17, 2017

Week of September 18-24, 2017.

Week 2!

Hopefully you're all feeling sore and tired! Just kidding! Hopefully you're all feeling refreshed and good (minus a few bouts of road rash from Saturday) and ready for a second week of random practices. Next week we will be done with meetings and sizing equipment and can just focus on training… and working really, really, really, really…. <you get the point>, hard! :) Thank you to those who picked up my gear randomly dropped along the trail on Saturday- did anyone pick up my blue mitts by any chance? They're the only things I didn't find when I got back to the car… if you can bring them to practice with you I'd appreciate it! :)

Juniors: If there is anything special for you or different, I will write it down and highlight it so that it's obvious- I'm going to try and just give out the info together and see how it goes.

Please note- if you need to look at previous posts- they're found under Blog Archives to the right of this page.

For those of you who are new to the blog- anything highlighted and coloured- usually means pay extra attention. For those of you who have been reading the blog for years- this doesn't mean ignore the rest… :D Just saying'! You know who you are!

Tuesday:  Meet at Muskoseepi- wear runners and be ready for a bit of chaos but it'll be worth it. If you're not selling anything and don't need to be sized, then you will be working out.

I will have the ski board at muskoseepi and we will do some sizing for skis, boots and poles. Please bring stuff that is too small or you're just not sure- and with a price in mind. I don't know how much you paid for your gear- it's been used, please use your best judgement on the stuff that you're selling. There are a few new kids to the team this year in need of clothing- if you have something that's too small, bring it, you never know if someone else may fit it.

Thursday: Meet at the lodge- bring runners and water bottle.

Saturday: (Not juniors) Meet at the dunes trail parking lot on the correction line- across from the dump turn off- as the forecast is for rain all week with a chance of sun… please bring BOTH shoes and boots for skiing/running/striding… I can't guarantee what it's going to be like. Be prepared! And don't forget a snack and water bottle please.

WELCOME BACK!!!

Another summer has blown on through and school is starting… so is ski practice!! :) Hope you're ready!

There is a lot to cover, please read in entirety and it will hopefully answer all of your questions.
  • There will be NO mountain excursion this year much to my disappointment; I am too busy this season with Mika’s schedule to fit this in. My apologies.
  • I would like to know who is interested in coming back/joining the team (junior or senior) to help with planning- please email me back with names before Sept 7th - thank you.
  • There is no fee changes this year- I am away a lot and will have guest coaches assisting where they can. Senior fees will be $100/month Sept 1-March 31 inclusive- checks are to be handed in at the team meeting, dated for the first of each month, there are no exceptions to this. There will not be a sibling discount this year.  All checks are to be made out to WNSC- Amounts can be paid in full if you would prefer. Junior fees will remain at $40/month to cover assisting coach expenses when on the road.
  • Wax box fees were decided by the parent groups to be reinstated this year- this is a 1 time annual fee implemented. Junior Race team pay $25; Senior race team pay $100- in September on a separate check please to WNSC.
  • Training will continue to be Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday- for both junior and senior teams. Until Daylight savings time/snow arrives- we will meet 5-6:30 for seniors and 5-6 Juniors on Tues/Thurs and Saturday will be 10-12 for both. Tuesday will meet at Muskoseepi and Thursday will be out at the ski lodge; Saturday will be out at the correction line where the dunes paved trails parking lot is, for practices.
  • The team will use the app: TEAMSNAP to communicate this year. It looks sharp and I need a few lessons on how to load all the information up on to it for you all. I will invite you as things get set up (I’m not ready for this yet).
  • Race Dates:

o   Frozen Thunder-Oct 27-29; is an option if people are interested- this will be discussed at the mandatory parent meeting (see below for dates).

  • First day of practice will be Tuesday September 12th at Muskoseepi; Thursday will be at Thrill Hill and Saturday will be at the correction line for this first week.
  • Mandatory parent meeting will be Tuesday, September 12th at Muskoseepi.
  • Ski swap/equipment sizing will be Tuesday, September 19th at Muskoseepi. Please bring your athlete’s equipment regardless if you just bought them new equipment last year- I do not want to be sizing kids mid season, or before their first race. If you have the opportunity to take your gear into Fast Trax, they will happily size you there as well. They have a 20% discount on equipment prior to the end of October. Ernie’s has some equipment as well and historically they have discounted us 10%- I will have to confirm this again for this season.

If you have any questions from this email, please write it down and bring it to the meeting on September 12th. Thank you everyone,

March 27-April 7, 2017.

EDITED:

"They" say that as you get older each season/year passes more and more quickly… I don't think I can get much older, because this year just flew by!!! :(      Hold the dinosaur comments… please!

This is the last blog of the season… and will be edited as details get sorted for the windup party.

Tuesday- Skate

Thursday- Skate- this will be our last practice of the season.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PARENTS: If you are intending your athlete(s) to be on the team for the 2017/18 season, there will be a MANDATORY parent meeting April 7 upon drop-off of the athletes 5:45-6:45. This is an important meeting to discuss what direction the team is going in for next year etc. Please come with paper and pen in hand.

April 7/8 = year end windup party for the team. It is a sleepover party, we were thinking of showing "Fantastic Beasts and where to find them" (someone needs to bring a projector) (and a few kids need to make sure that they can watch it- it's PG13).
Wind-up party start- 5:30pm

Hotdog supper- we will need 2 doz buns, there are lots of hotdogs
Veggies- a veggie tray would be great
Cake- Liam is bringing dessert
Snacks- popcorn, chips, pop, candy… everything that I say no to all year long are welcome to this windup

Followed by games, movie, sleep, bring your own breakfast, clean up and pickup by 10am Saturday as the AGM is starting at 11am. This is the gist of the evening- I believe headlamps are a must (or glow-sticks) and more details to come...

Have a great summer and play hard! I'll see you in the beginning of September- around the 7th.

March 20-26, 2017

Great job with the posters today crew and the downhill dash!! We still have a long way to catch up with Nathan… but that's ok- we can do it!! ;D

This week is making sure we jam in all the sessions we haven't done yet, just in case all the snow is gone by next week. My intention is to try and ski next week still… We shall see. :(

Tuesday- Swimsuit ski. Although next Tuesday looks way warmer than this Tuesday… there may not be any snow- so let's take our chances!! Photos at 5:45- ski until 7. Skate skiing- we said good bye to our classic skis last week. :( Please make sure you summer wax your skis- something warm and cheap should be put on them.

Thursday- Bring-a-friend to practice. We will be on skate skis- but have the fish scales for the newbies. And each needs to bring $10 as I've never realized that they need to pay their day-use membership. I'm sorry I've never thought of this in the past.

Saturday- Skate ski- bring rock skis and keep your fingers crossed that we can still ski by then.

Team Wind-up will be April 7- it's a sleepover in the lodge. Details still need to be worked out so come with ideas to Thursday's practice.

______________________________________

Junior Race Team

Thursday- Swimsuit ski- bring your swim suits and goofy outfits and photos will be at 5:45! Skate skiing with Coach Caroline afterwards- with clothes on! :D This will be the last ski of the season for you guys. Parents, please remember that a layer of warm, cheap wax is recommended for the skis to have on them so that they don't sit and dry out all summer.

Sunday- 1-3pm Team Wind-up party. I'll need a volunteer to start the fire outside for us please. Hotdogs and buns will be provided by Mika. If condiments can be brought, a potato salad of sorts, a veggie platter and a dessert- that would be great. I'll send out an email with everyone's names on it, who will be attending the wind-up party and each person can place their name on an item- with a reply-all to the group, that may be the easiest. Thank you everyone for your help with this! And thank you for your participation in this successful season!

March 13-19, 2017

Thank you everyone for your support and letters to nominate me for Coach of the Year. Award or no award, it is an honour to be a coach everyday. I love it and you guys- so thank you for your support in turn!

Great job on the team relay today!!! Thank you ALL for permitting me to teach the junior team about poor sportsmanship- it was a good lesson and they were all shocked that they could learn from my bad behaviour today!! I'll recap at practice on Tuesday for the rest of you! :D Great day of laughing and glamour!! See Wapiti Nordic FB Page for pics! Thank you Lori for posting those.

This month is flying by and there's still some house-keeping stuff to do… so pay attention to the blog!!!

If you can come and stay, great, leave early is fine, show for a bit- super awesome. Come out and participate. BRING PICTURES OF THE PAST 3 SEASONS!
  • Team photo day! Thursday 16th- wear your wapiti jacket. If you don't have one, wear a race suit top. 5:45 in the stadium.
  • Downhill Dash- this Sunday- the last of the 6PAC race series for this season!

Tuesday- Classic. It may be our last one for a long time. :(

March 6-12, 2017.

Championships were amazing!! Thank you everyone for all of your assistance to have such a successful weekend!

Team Wapiti is amazing and has always been! As a coach, it's a great feeling when I have other coaches coming up to me all weekend to ask about our team, or compliment you athletes on how great you guys are not just in speed but in support of each other… so thank you! Thank you for being a great group this year and motivational across the province. :D It doesn't go unnoticed and I don't say it often enough- you're all super awesome!

A huge congrats to Zoe who got a gold in the North American SnowShoeing Championships on the plains of Abraham in Quebec this past weekend as well!! We look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back!

This week- most of the team are post season and there's a few who will be still ramping things up for nationals- so we're all going to support those who are going to Nationals AND prepare for the the remaining 6 PAC races- team relay's & downhill dash.

Team Relays- are this Sunday (March 12) in the lodge. Come dressed up in your team outfit! Teams are: 1 boy& 1 girl. Relays will be run like they were in Canmore- First person starts, second person goes, first person goes, second person goes, first person goes and second person finishes. CLASSIC RACE Start at 2pm. Registration is 1-1:30 in the lodge ($5/racer). Distances: 9 and under candy cane lane; 10-15 Sun puppy and Candy Cane lane; 16+ Sun Puppy and Clawridge. Ages are guesses and you can choose which distance you would like! I will need a few people to help with setting up the course- it's short and can be walked. :)

Downhill Dash- is next Sunday (March 19) 2PM start at the top of Big Dipper (so show earlier than normal). Registration is 1-1:30 in the lodge- $5/racer. Hand timers will need to be used… I will ask Crawford to work on setting that course and will need help with a few v-boards to ensure no one gets lost on their dash!

Tuesday- Classic- we have enough snow finally, so we may as well work on some classic technique! :D

Thursday- Classic- we haven't done enough!!!

Saturday- Skate- we will be doing some hill work- bring a snack.

Sunday- 6PAC

February 26- March 5, 2017

EDITED

Man we're running out of time!! 5 weeks left and two weekends of racing to go (for those going to Nationals), plus two more 6 PACS and we FINALLY have good snow!!!:( What a wonky winter- and you guys are such troopers.

Congrats to the crew who raced in Hinton! Great results and impressive shooting!!!

This week- please pay attention to the details.

Makena, Ella, Jordan, Zach, Seamus, Liam, Amy, Johanna, Mika, Will, Aidan and Katie confirmed verbally to attend the ABCup Championships in Canmore this coming weekend. IF your name ISN'T on the list and it should be, please email me asap to have this changed and vice versa.

Please register for the races at zone4 no later than 10pm on Wednesday evening.  RELAY teams as discussed Tuesday evening are in this order of racing: racer 1-racer 2- racer 3- racer 1- racer 2- racer 3.
  1. Johanna, Mika & Ella
  2. Liam, Will and Aidan
  3. Katie, Amy, Mak
  4. Zach, Seamus, Jordan

*IF YOU'RE COMING TO CANMORE: please rsvp your numbers to jemspruden@gmail.com by Wednesday 10pm for the SATURDAY supper. We will be eating at St. Lucia's again- this time with our food pre-ordered so that it won't take as long. :) I'm already hungry thinking about eating there!!

Tuesday: The only practice this week (sort of- if you're NOT going to Canmore- coach Caroline will be doing practice on Thursday- so you can still come- see Junior team info below for details). We will be classic skiing (finally) and cutting practice short for those attending the races in Canmore to wax- those who are not going to Canmore can ski longer- provisions will be made to accommodate you.

Supperhttp://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c044ea4a822a2ff2-team to check to see if you're bringing anything for food.

Waxing: Rex Blue- and only Rex Blue. It looks like we may be able to race on it… will see though when we get there.

I will be leaving after work on Thursday- and will have some gear with me. Pruden's can take some gear and I'm looking for another vehicle to take a bit of gear as well please. Let me know if you have room in a Thule box (that's all we will need for extra space).

Friday: Meet in the Canmore Lodge for 1:30pm, ready to ski your courses. I'd like everyone to (hopefully) skate your race courses (all 3) and will need parental assistance with this. Parents- if you're planning on skiing on ANY of the days- please register yourself as coach and pay for your tickets online through zone4. As we only have 12 athletes and everyone is familiar with Canmore now- we will all need to work together especially on Saturday to make sure everyone gets to their races on time etc- it's going to be a bit chaotic with two races on the same day- but really EXCITING!!!

Saturday:

  • There are 2 races (both skate)- one at 9am and one at 2pm. Please read the race notice here: Notice for all the details, maps and distances etc.
  • Team supper at St. Lucia's. Details will be sent out in a text message when they're made available. Please see note in red above.
Sunday: Race-Classic and depart for home. :D

Coach Caroline is back and we have decided that she will NOT be coming to Canmore this week- which means that practice is happening Thursday and Sunday. If there are any senior team members around- they will also be joining- so you guys can show off your mad skiing skills to them!! And maybe teach them a thing or two!:D Make sure you bring water bottles and snacks and have a great week of skiing. I will see you all next week!!

Thursday: Classic

Sunday: Skate

So apparently there's enough snow to still ski on according to Sophie and Jenny. SO we're skating until the end of this week where we may or may not get enough snow…. again… to maybe be able to train for our upcoming races…. ARG!!!! What's with this terrible year for snow?!

I'm still waiting to hear from a few folks regarding CANMORE AND Nationals- please email me if you plan or plan not to attend.

Please come prepared for cooler temperatures and headlamps. We are now doing the best we can with what we have. Please be advised that practice may be running inside next week if we can't get the speed and interval workouts we need done this week.

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday- skate skiing.

Sunday- Sveinsgaard Loppet! It's a go- classic and/or skate, you choose. Registration is from 9-9:30. Start is 10am. Blue Moon, Half Moon or Full Moon and you choose your distance. Mika will be skiing 10km- I recommend this distance for everyone except Troy. :D

EDITED

It's already Valentine's Day, Family Day long weekend and there's only 6 weeks left of training!!! WHERE IS THE TIME GOING?!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE BIATHLETE RACERS THIS WEEKEND!!! WOOHOO!!

A big shout out to Teddy for writing the blog for me last week and adding in some of her own edits… :/  It was easier to drive and keep her quiet awake this way! ;D

Nationals- please check your emails (Juvenile and Older) regarding this- it's important to make a decision ASAP to accommodate the best experience for everyone please.

Please email Claire if you're planning on attending the AB Cup races in Canmore! March 4/5.

Tuesday: Be prepared for a hard workout. Our bodies have had a rest week (minus some racing this past weekend) and so it's time to prepare for our last races in Canmore. Having said that- it's supposed to rain tomorrow and not freeze overnight… I will send out a text regarding any changes (i.e.: trails are closed etc) IF there are any changes, we will meet at the Eastlink on the track. If you haven't heard from me via text by 4:30pm Tuesday- we will meet for a skating session.

Thursday: Again- skating due to a deterioration in nature's terrible attempt at winter… or meeting at the Eastlink… if there's no text by 4:30pm on Thursday, we will be skiing.

Saturday: I'm guessing skate still… meet in the timing tower with your gear unless you hear from me otherwise.

Sunday: 6pac race if the snow has survived. Temps are supposed to be colder. It will be a skate race and I'm not sure of the distance portion- only because of the potential catastrophic environmental disaster that may occur this week to our trails! :( Registration closes at 1:30- $5/racer. I will not be here for this race- but it's still a go, regardless- warm-up and cool downs are expected and fun MUST be had by all!! :D

BLOG WILL BE UPDATED ON MONDAY EVENING.

What an amazing weekend of racing Wapiti's!!!
I'm SO proud of you all. It was a perfect weekend of racing combined with super helpful parents, super fast athletes and super great races being put on by Red Deer Nordic! Thank you all for such a great weekend.

This coming weekend is the local Biathlon Calforex Cup Races. There is a change in our schedule according to what I had suggested a few weeks back- so please disregard that schedule and focus up on this post! :)

Tuesday- I'm hoping we can still ski- come to lodge to collect your equipment and bring rock skis for just in case. (skate) I have no idea how things are out there- although there's a lot of grass poking through. :(

Thursday- Skate.

Saturday- There will be no official training as there are no coaches in GP. Please go for a ski on your own.

What an amazing weekend of racing JUNIOR Wapiti's!!!
I'm SO proud of you all. It was a perfect weekend of racing combined with super helpful parents, super fast athletes and super great races being put on by Red Deer Nordic! Thank you all for such a great weekend.

Thursday- Please come prepared for both techniques and pick up your equipment from the races this weekend.

Sunday- 2-4 will be a regular practice, unless it's -20oC and colder by 12noon on Environment Canada, then you will meet coach Caroline at the track at the Eastlink Centre. We will need a parent volunteer this day as Claire is going to be in Prince George for the weekend with some of the race team.

January 23-29, 2017.

Great job on training this week!

If you weren't at the 6pac today you missed out on a valuable lesson… sprint racing requires a very high, quick tempo, which those who raced today were able to execute beautifully due to the tedious metronome training that I've been putting you guys through. Although some of you were feeling very disheartened with the training and not being able to keep up to the ticks- today it paid off and I'm super proud!! The rest of you can show off in Red Deer next weekend! :)

*I have a few orphans requiring a ride down Friday morning- if you have room please email Claire

Tuesday: Classic- will be more training on sprint racing and fighting for your spot… and starts. We will be in the stadium for most of practice.

Thursday: Skate- some hill technique and one skate and you guys are ready for Red Deer! Practice is over at 6:15 and waxing skis from here on in plus team dinner.

Red Deer Preparation:

  • Please wax both sets of skis with rex blue. If you're a midget or younger you will wax your skis with LF7 on top of this. Please make sure that your grip zones are clean and the sides of your skis as well. If you're a juvenile and older just Rex Blue please. Older athletes this may change- so please double check with me on Thursday.
  • Juniors- parents please wax skis while the team is out practicing- this will help with the congestion.
  • Senior team- please plan to wax your classic skis Tuesday evening to help with the congestion as well. I plan on ending practice a bit early to accommodate this. If you don't finish them- you can finish them BEFORE practice starts on Thursday. Please plan ahead and come prepared.
  • Supper Plan- check HERE to see what you're supposed to be bringing/sign-up to inform the team what you're bringing. There are quite a few families who haven't put their names down yet- please do so.
  • Registration closes Wednesday, at midnight now.
  • Red Deer race notice is up and online: AB Cup 5/6 and then register yourself here: Registration.
  • There are no waxing facilities here and we will be outdoors in the parking lot. Please help us by ensuring that your skis are cleaned properly and waxed to the blog specifics- this helps immensely.
Friday: Meet at Riverbend Golf course to ski your course(s)- skate skiing at 2pm. You are on your own for supper this evening. I will send out a group text to those who are attending the race around 8:30pm with details regarding times to come on Saturday. With classic races I say 2 hours before as this gives me ample time to get the kid's wax done to their requests.

Saturday: Wax will be tricky if the weather is going to be as warm as they're predicting so as many parents who can help will be very welcomed. Also, if you have a heat gun- this too will be welcome. Sprint racing requires everyone to pay attention to results and times as well and I will need parents to ensure that their athletes get to the start line 2-4 times during the day, on time. If wax is changing, I will be busy waxing and not watching or cheering- these days are fun but always a bit hectic. Chocolate milk needs to be consumed after the qualifiers and then after they're finally done racing (whenever this is). In between qualifiers and racing, athletes need to be resting and keeping warm. Parents- please ensure this happens.

Team supper- To Be Determined. I'll let you know when I do.

Sunday: Skate racing- distance, please show 1.5 hours prior to race start.

Please read all the notes above! If you're not racing in Red Deer- no worries- see you Thursday and plan to be off snow and picked up for 6:15! See you then.

January 16-22, 2017

Great week of training crew. Today's race was great to watch and see how you're all doing with training in general. I think some more tempo work needs to be done- so we will continue to work on that this week. Sadly- the weather is not cooperating with us and we may not be able to practice out at the trails if the snow turns too much (apparently we need to bring an umbrella for Thursday)…

PLEASE READ ALL THE NOTES BELOW!

1. PLEASE NOTE: An email was sent out this weekend for athletes/parents- please read it and have it done for the deadline noted in the email.

2. RED DEER: If you're attending Red Deer races, Jake is trying to hook the team up with a discount price at the Red Deer Lodge- please email jemspruden@gmail.com (please CC me to the email as well) to confirm if you're going and how many are in your party ASAP so that this can be done for us. Red Deer race notice is up and online: AB Cup 5/6 and then register yourself here: Registration. Please note- Registration closes at Midnight on the TUESDAY.

3. 6PAC: Thank you parents for helping out with the 6PAC today. There is another 6PAC scheduled for this coming Sunday- I spoke with Crawford and weather pending/how much damage is incurred this week. If there are changes- I will send an email out later in the week- sprint classic.
___________________________________

Tuesday: Skate- there shouldn't be too much damage yet to the snow. Bring your metronomes, headlamps and water bottles please.

Thursday: IF it rains- we will meet on the track at the Eastlink. IF it doesn't rain- we will be skating- unless we're asked by the club to stay off the trails- then I will send out an email…

Saturday: Be prepared for both techniques- we will be skiing if the weather is below freezing and is freezing over night. I have no idea what to expect after this warm junk that's coming through… :(

Sunday: 6 PAC race skate distance. 2pm start $5/athlete and registration closes at 1:30.

Sunday: 6 PAC race skate distance. 2pm start $5/athlete and registration closes at 1:30. As it was my daughter who complained the most about having to practice post race… Apparently I wasn't clear- it is convenient that the races occur during training time- however, the juniors still need to get out there and train- so training will resume after the sprint races and coach Caroline will take the team out- come prepared to skate as well- just in case the trails are terrible. Training will therefore be 1:30 (to incorporate warm-up time) - 3:30pm. Thank you and I apologize to the other athletes who were also disappointed. :)

January 9-15, 2016.

This week the focus is on technique and tempo. The weather is going to hold for us and not get any chillier- thank goodness and unfortunately we're going to run into really warm weather the end of this week.

There is supposed to be a 6 pac race scheduled for the end of this week. I've emailed out for feedback if this is happening or not. I'll update this blog if the 6 pac race will be a go or not. Please check your emails asap and this blog Saturday, mid to late afternoon.

Tuesday: IF YOU HAVE A SMART PHONE OR iPOD PLEASE DOWNLOAD A FREE METRONOME APP ONTO IT AND BRING IT TO PRACTICE. (Seamus recommends Metrotimer- it looks cool!) If you don't have such a device don't worry about it- it will just help things be easier. Classic practice.

ThursdayIF YOU HAVE A SMART PHONE OR iPOD PLEASE DOWNLOAD A FREE METRONOME APP ONTO IT AND BRING IT TO PRACTICE. Skate practice.

Saturday: Waxing session: 9-9:50am- if you're not confident in your waxing, I will be doing a glide wax session before practice. Come prepared and ready to start at 9am. Skate practice- bring your metronome with you again. Remember we're out in the timing tower as Jackrabbits has started!

TEAM BONDING NIGHT: Juniors included… we will be going to the movies- SING - is the choice. If you'd like your athlete(s) to join us we will be at the main entrance for 6:15pm (movie time is 6:45) this way kids can get their snacks (yes snacks are allowed) and we can all sit together in the theatre. See you there!

Sunday: 6 PAC race skate distance. 2pm start $5/athlete and registration closes at 1:30.

Junior Team (see note above too)

A super huge congratulations to the Juniors for doing 10km today! Woohoo!

Parents, please respect the start time of 5:45 and 2:00pm. It affects those who are on snow on time and their energy and interest wanes every minute they have to wait for someone to get on snow on time. It's also frustrating as everyone starts to get cold etc. I was late today on snow as I was side tracked but still managed to get out before three athletes- please respect the start time and just plan to leave your houses 10 minutes earlier. IT IS NOT OK TO BE LATE and there will be no more tolerance for lateness. 1 or 2 minutes will have athletes doing burpies, anything over 3 minutes will have athletes being left.

Thursday: Classic Practice- please ensure skis are waxed with blue wax.

Sunday 6 PAC race skate distance. 2pm start $5/athlete and registration closes at 1:30.Skate Practice- please ensure athletes have water bottles. There will be time after the race for a group ski- skate ski.

March 25-31, 2024.

I am not really sure what happened to this season. It went by so quickly!! Thank you team for a great season and a very special thank you to...
